Four African countries — Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon — produce around 75% of the world’s cocoa, yet farmers capture only a small share of the value created by the global chocolate industry. Now, the four countries are working together through a new Cocoa Value Addition Alliance aimed at shifting the model from simply exporting beans to processing, manufacturing and building more value at home.
In this mid-week edition of Daba Markets Talk, we explore why previous attempts to increase producer power have struggled, why cocoa cannot operate like an OPEC-style cartel, and why the bigger opportunity may lie in moving from bean to brand. We also look at cocoa price volatility, Europe’s incoming deforestation rules, the challenges of coordinating four major producers, and what this initiative could mean for Africa’s broader push to capture more value from its natural resources.

ECOWAS is once again targeting 2027 for the launch of the Eco, a shared currency intended to make trade, payments, and investment easier across West Africa. This episode traces the project’s four-decade history, explains why repeated launch dates have failed, and examines the economic convergence standards countries must meet before joining.
In this edition, we explore the challenges of applying one monetary policy across economies as different as Nigeria, Ghana, and the CFA franc countries, including inflation, fiscal deficits, exchange-rate policy, and exposure to different economic shocks.
The episode also considers what may be different this time: a phased rollout involving qualifying countries first, the registration of the Eco trademark, an active presidential task force, and a potentially more favorable regional economic environment.

Bridge Bank Group Côte d’Ivoire’s IPO sold out in less than 24 hours, despite being scheduled to remain open for more than 2 weeks. In this midweek edition of Daba Markets Talk, we examine what drove demand for the 67.5 billion FCFA offer, the bank’s financial performance, its 337.5 billion FCFA valuation and the dividend potential that attracted investors.
We also explain what oversubscription means for share allocation, why the speed of the sellout does not guarantee gains after listing and which risks investors should monitor, including credit quality, valuation and market liquidity.
The episode also looks at how Daba gives investors digital access to IPOs and why completing verification and funding an account before an offer opens can matter when shares sell out this quickly.
